KO of the week
Prescott KO’s Khan
by grestrep on Mar.13, 2009, under Amir Khan, Breidis Prescott, KO of the week
For a long run, Amir Khan was undefeated, a young prospect in the making - even though he fought his entire career in the UK, away from the mainstream boxing community. Nobody knew much about him outside of Britain, but he was out there, knocking people out and on his way to become boxing’s next big thing. And then came Breidis Prescott, a seemingly unknown fighter who I personally thought was British (due to his last name) but turned out to be from Barranquilla, Colombia.
Prescott met Khan, and in just one round, the Colombian gave Khan what most boxing critics regard as a “reality check”, making Khan come crashing down to earth and destroying his aura of invincibility. But not only is Khan haunted by that loss, he now has to face some harsh criticism regarding his supposed “glass chin”, which was revealed when he lost against Prescott.
Anyways, lets stop wasting time and see what actually happened in that fight:

by grestrep on Feb.18, 2009, under Jose Luis Zertuche, KO of the week, Kelly Pavlik
So I’m late posting previous week’s KO of the week, but here I am. Pavlik is also fighting this weekend against Rubio, and I’m not sure what the outcome will be. But lets see the following KO. The important things to watch are the initial and finishing KO’s.
The first one at 0:05 and the brutal finishing one at 1:11. Enjoy:
Donaire KO’s Darchinyan
by grestrep on Feb.07, 2009, under KO of the week, Nonito Donaire, Vic Darchinyan
Honestly, I don’t know much about Vic. But based on the very few fights I’ve seen of him, I knew why he was the flyweight king. Too damn fast, and every single one of his punches packs so much raw power - he can knock out flyweights left and right with much ease. The former IBO and IBF flyweight champion, nobody could beat this guy.
But then came Nonito Donaire.
Forget about the fight going the full 12 rounds, or forget a narrow split decision. Donaire fought a strategic fight after having carefully studied Vic’s style. I saw this fight a while back - Darchinyan’s power and speed were neutralized from the moment the bell rang in round 1. And then came the sudden and inevitable flash KO in round 5. A crisp counter left hook which Darchinyan didn’t see coming, and it was game over for him.
Many people think Donaire took revenge against Vic, because you see - 2 fights before, Darchinyan had broken Glenn Donaire’s jaw (Nonito’s brother) - successfully defending his flyweight titles. Like many boxers do, instead of trying to get a rematch with Donaire, Darchinyan frustratingly moved up to super flyweight. He now is unified super flyweight champion - holding IBF, WBA and WBC titles.
He can say whatever he wants, trash talk as much as he wants to, but he will never erase that knockout from his resume:
Hearns KO’s Duran
by grestrep on Jan.29, 2009, under KO of the week, Roberto Duran, Thomas Hearns
I don’t like watching the following fight, particularly since Duran is one of my favorite fighters, but - the knockout that Tommy Hearns inflicted on Duran that afternoon just needs to be included in the annals of Most Brutal Boxing Knockouts ever. A huge right hand, which caught Duran perfectly on the chin, was more than enough to put the legendary “Hands of Stone” to sleep … like a baby. At 3:14 of the video you can clearly see that Duran must have been thinking:
“Where am I, Where am I?”
Mercer KO’s Morrison (brutal)
by grestrep on Jan.19, 2009, under KO of the week, Ray Mercer, Tommy Morrison
Trust me, this is one of the most brutal knockouts I’ve ever seen - brutal in the sense that Mercer continued to punch Morrison mercilessly while he was already out on the ropes. For those who don’t know, Morrison is the guy who appears in Rocky 5, and Mercer is currently an MMA fighter who fought Kimbo Slice. Mercer lost that fight by guillotine choke
By the way, this is this current week’s KO of the week. The Gamache KO was last week’s KO of the week (I posted it late).
